Source: DefiLlama perps dashboard, read 20 Oct 2026 (reported volume). Shares are our calculation against DefiLlama’s totals of $634.3B 30-day volume and $13.3B open interest across all venues it tracks. Hyperliquid’s figure covers its core perps entry; The Block put total Hyperliquid OI including HIP-3 markets at $14.3B in early September 2026. Drift/Velocity is excluded because its relaunched volume is not yet tracked. Some venues’ reported volume includes incentive-driven trading; DefiLlama shows lower “normalized” figures for Aster and Lighter.

Volume shows how much trading happens; open interest shows how much money is actually at risk in open positions, and it is harder to inflate with wash trading. On both measures, Hyperliquid was clearly ahead of every other perp DEX on DefiLlama on 20 October 2026, with about a third of tracked 30-day volume and over half of tracked open interest. Variational, Lighter and Aster form a second tier.

How DEXs compare with centralized exchanges

Centralized exchanges still dominate derivatives. TokenInsight estimates $12.0T of CEX derivatives volume in Q2 2026, with Binance at a 36.5% average share and Bybit at 10.1%. Perp DEXs handled about 12% of global perp volume in September 2026, according to Castle Labs data reported by PANews. CEXs offer fiat rails and very deep books but require KYC and custody of your funds; see Hyperliquid vs Binance and Hyperliquid vs Bybit.

How to choose

  1. Check legality first. Almost every venue here excludes the US; Lighter, Aster and Binance derivatives also exclude or limit the UK. Don't use a VPN to get around restrictions.
  2. Compare all-in costs, not headline fees. Spread and slippage on thin books often cost more than a 0.045% taker fee.
  3. Look at open interest and track record. 2025–2026 saw a $295M exploit at Drift, a price-feed rollback at Paradex and manipulation losses for pool-backed vaults, including Hyperliquid's HLP.
  4. Keep leverage low. Max leverage is a ceiling, not a target.

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest perp DEX right now?

On 20 October 2026, DefiLlama showed Hyperliquid with $208.6B of 30-day volume and $7.5B of open interest, the highest of any perp DEX it tracks. Variational, Lighter and Aster followed.

Which perp DEX has the lowest fees?

Lighter (standard accounts) and Paradex (retail) charge 0% maker and taker fees, with order delays. Aster charges 0% maker on most crypto perps. Hyperliquid's base rates are 0.015% maker and 0.045% taker, with volume, staking and referral discounts.

Are perp DEXs safer than centralized exchanges?

They remove custody risk but add smart-contract, bridge and oracle risk. Both models have lost user or pool funds in 2025–2026, so size positions with that in mind.
