The HLP vault (Hyperliquidity Provider), explained
HLP is Hyperliquid's community-owned protocol vault. It runs market-making strategies, takes over positions that cannot be liquidated on the order book, and receives a share of trading fees. Anyone can deposit USDC to share in its profit and loss, with a 4-day lockup.
What HLP is
HLP (Hyperliquidity Provider) is a protocol vault, run by the protocol rather than by an individual trader. According to the official docs its activities include market making through several strategies, performing liquidations, supplying USDC in Earn, and accruing a portion of trading fees. It is community-owned: anyone can deposit and share in its profit and loss.
Protocol vaults charge no management fee and no profit share. That is different from user vaults, where the leader takes a cut.
How HLP makes (and loses) money
- Market making: HLP quotes bids and offers on many markets and earns the spread when the market is calm.
- Liquidations: if a position cannot be closed on the order book and its equity drops below two-thirds of maintenance margin, the Liquidator Vault (one of HLP's component strategies) takes it over. The docs say backstop liquidations are profitable on average, because the trader's remaining maintenance margin is not returned to them. See liquidation.
- Fees: a share of trading fees flows to HLP.
The flip side: HLP ends up holding positions nobody else wants at the worst moments. If prices keep moving against a position it inherited, HLP takes the loss.
When HLP has lost money
| Date | Event | Reported HLP impact |
|---|---|---|
| 12 Mar 2025 | A trader built a very large leveraged ETH long, then withdrew margin so the position was liquidated into HLP | About $4M loss (Cointelegraph) |
| 26 Mar 2025 | JELLYJELLY short squeeze; validators delisted the market | Unrealised loss of about $12M at the peak (The Block); settled without that loss |
| 12 Nov 2025 | Alleged POPCAT manipulation using a $20M buy wall that was then pulled | About $4.9M bad debt (CoinDesk) |
| 9 Apr 2026 | Suspected FARTCOIN manipulation flagged by PeckShield | About $1.5M drawdown in 24 hours (Forklog) |
HLP has also profited from stress: during the 10 October 2025 market crash it was reported to have earned over $40M (The Defiant). The pattern is that HLP usually earns steadily and occasionally takes sharp losses. Details are on is Hyperliquid safe.
Deposits, lockup and withdrawals
You deposit USDC from your Hyperliquid account on the HLP vault page. Deposits are locked for 4 days: you can withdraw 4 days after your most recent deposit. For example, a deposit on 14 September at 08:00 can be withdrawn from 18 September at 08:00. Adding more resets the clock for the whole balance.
Your share is shown as a portion of vault equity, so its value changes every second with HLP's open positions.

Open HyperliquidWhat returns to expect
HLP's historical returns are shown on its vault page as APR and a PnL chart. They vary a lot from month to month, and past returns say nothing reliable about the future. We do not quote a "typical" APR because any single number would be misleading. Look at the full history, including the drawdowns above, before deciding.
Risks to understand
- Trading losses: HLP is an active trading strategy, not a savings account. It can lose money, and has done so.
- Tail risk: manipulation of thin markets and violent price moves land on HLP first.
- Lockup: you cannot exit during a crisis if you deposited in the last 4 days.
- Platform risk: HLP lives on Hyperliquid. Bridge, validator or smart-contract problems would affect it too.
- Intervention risk: in the JELLYJELLY case validators stepped in to protect HLP. That limited losses but shows outcomes can depend on governance decisions.
Never put in money you might need at short notice. Read risk management before committing a meaningful share of your portfolio.
