The legal situation in China
Mainland China is not on Hyperliquid's restricted list, but national law prohibits crypto trading. The PBOC's 2021 multi-agency notice declared all virtual-currency business activities illegal financial activities, and the PBOC restated this, stablecoins included, in late 2025. Offshore exchange sites are restricted by the national firewall, and banks may not process crypto-linked payments.
Key facts
- Sep 2021 PBOC notice: virtual-currency business activities, including services by offshore exchanges to mainland residents, are illegal financial activities.
- Late 2025: PBOC repeated that virtual currencies, stablecoins included, have no legal-tender status and that related business is illegal.
- Offshore exchange websites are restricted by the national firewall, and app stores flag exchange apps as high-risk.
- No licensed crypto-derivatives venue exists on the mainland; Hong Kong has a separate regime.
What are your options in China?
If Hyperliquid or local law restricts this country, the honest answer is: don't try to get around it. Using a VPN breaks Hyperliquid's Terms of Use and may break local law. Look for derivatives platforms licensed by People's Bank of China (PBOC), and check back here: rules change.
