The legal situation in Japan

Japan is not on Hyperliquid's restricted list. Crypto exchange services in Japan require FSA registration, and in February 2025 the FSA asked Apple and Google to remove the apps of unregistered offshore exchanges. On 15 July 2026 the Diet passed amendments that move crypto into the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act and raise penalties for unregistered operation. We found no FSA action naming Hyperliquid.

Key facts

  • Registered domestic exchanges offer crypto margin trading to retail, capped at 2x leverage under industry (JVCEA) rules.
  • Feb 2025: the FSA asked Apple and Google to remove apps of unregistered exchanges Bybit, MEXC, LBank, KuCoin and Bitget.
  • 15 Jul 2026: Diet passed FIEA amendments reclassifying crypto as financial products; maximum penalties for unregistered operation rise to 10 years in prison and a 10 million yen fine.
  • Tax: crypto gains are currently taxed as miscellaneous income at up to about 55%; a separate rate of about 20% with 3-year loss carry-forward is expected from January 2028.
  • No FSA warning or block specifically naming Hyperliquid or DEX perps was found.

What are your options in Japan?

If Hyperliquid or local law restricts this country, the honest answer is: don't try to get around it. Using a VPN breaks Hyperliquid's Terms of Use and may break local law. Look for derivatives platforms licensed by Financial Services Agency (FSA), and check back here: rules change.
