The legal situation in the United Kingdom
The UK is not on Hyperliquid's restricted list (terms updated 15 Jun 2026) and the frontend is not geoblocked there. On 21 May 2026 (updated 7 Jun 2026) the FCA added Hyperliquid (hyperfoundation.org, app.hyperliquid.xyz) to its warning list as an unauthorised firm that 'may be providing or promoting financial services or products without our permission'. Separately, since 6 January 2021 the FCA has banned the sale, marketing and distribution of crypto derivatives to retail consumers.
Key facts
- FCA warning list entry for Hyperliquid, first published 21 May 2026: not authorised by the FCA; consumers told to avoid dealing with it and that Financial Ombudsman/FSCS protection is unlikely to apply.
- FCA rules (PS20/10, in force 6 Jan 2021) ban firms from selling, marketing or distributing crypto derivatives (futures, options, CFDs) to retail consumers; the ban on cETNs was lifted in October 2025, but the derivatives ban remains.
- The FCA's final rules for the new cryptoasset regime were published in mid-2026; the authorisation gateway opened 30 Sep 2026 and the regime is expected to apply from 25 Oct 2027. The FCA plans to consult on DeFi later in 2026.
- Hyperliquid's own terms do not list the UK as restricted, and no ISP-level block of Hyperliquid in the UK was found.
- Tax: HMRC generally treats crypto disposals by individuals as subject to Capital Gains Tax.
What are your options in the United Kingdom?
If Hyperliquid or local law restricts this country, the honest answer is: don't try to get around it. Using a VPN breaks Hyperliquid's Terms of Use and may break local law. Look for derivatives platforms licensed by Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and check back here: rules change.
